All you can eat. Humans and their food.

Published on 29/01/2024

As part of the Lëtzebuerg City Museum's temporary exhibition, "All You Can Eat: Humans and Their Food", the Luxembourg Institute of Science and Technology (LIST) is contributing to a captivating exploration of the intricate dynamics that govern our relationship with food.

The exhibition, running at the museum, delves into the historical evolution of our diets, the impact of diverse factors on our food culture, and the consequences of our eating habits on the environment.

Unraveling the Threads of Food Culture

Humans, perpetually tethered to the need for sustenance, have navigated through constraints and restrictions dictated by climate, economics, and culture since time immemorial. "All You Can Eat" aims to dissect the multifaceted influences that shape our diets and illuminate the changing dynamics over the course of history. It raises questions about the influence of religious customs, the sway of local traditions, and the role of global value chains in shaping our contemporary food culture. What's more, the exhibition grapples with the pressing challenge of ensuring global food security in the face of a rapidly growing world population and seeks to define the elusive concept of "good" nutrition.

A Glimpse into Food of the future

The final room of the exhibition, dedicated to food of the future, showcases LIST's groundbreaking endeavors in bioreactor technology. Visitors are treated to a visual journey featuring bioreactors used for cell suspension culture, illustrating LIST's commitment to innovative approaches in food production. In collaboration with INFORS HT and the Central Collection of Algal Cultures (CCAC – University of Duisburg-Essen), LIST engineers provide living algae displays, a testament to their cutting-edge research in sustainable food sources.

The scientists of LIST's Biotechnologies and Environmental Analytics Platform play a pivotal role, installing the materials and cultivating algae at the LIST Hautcharage premises. This living example of biotechnological innovation is then periodically transferred to the museum, engaging visitors in the potential of futuristic food cultivation methods.

LIST Hautcharage Premises: An Open Invitation to Explore GreenTech Innovations

Emphasizing its dedication to public engagement, LIST Hautcharage premises of the GreenTech Innovation Centre is set to open its doors to the public in 2024. Offering four unique visits in the framework of the "All You Can Eat" exhibition, LIST Hautcharage aims to provide a deeper insight into its activities related to biotechnological advancements and sustainable practices.

In alignment with the overarching theme of the exhibition, LIST's contributions offer a glimpse into the future of food production, where technological innovation intertwines with environmental responsibility. The "All You Can Eat" exhibition, with LIST's participation, acts as a bridge between the past, present, and future of our food culture, inviting visitors to contemplate the complexities and possibilities embedded in every bite we take.
