LIST hosted EU Commissioner Iliana Ivanova

The Luxembourg Institute of Science and Technology (LIST) welcomed European Commissioner Iliana Ivanova during her recent visit to Luxembourg, where she attended a presentation of some of the most important EU-funded projects currently being carried out by the Institute.

Highlighting the LIST's cutting-edge work in AI, urban regeneration, energy ecosystems, and personalized medicine, researchers showcased four prominent EU projects.

Dirk Fransaer, CEO ad interim of LIST, stated:

“The mission we have is to support the innovation of Luxembourg and Europe through high-impact research. As such, LIST has been a pivotal player in European scientific research, participating in 138 European projects, coordinating 28 of them. These initiatives have garnered over €62 million in EU contributions across seven funding programs, including H2020, HORIZON, LIFE, EDF, DIGITAL, and EU4H.”

CitCom.ai: Pioneering AI and Electromobility

CitCom.ai is an ambitious project focused on advancing AI, data, and robotics to address real-world challenges related to the Green Deal. With a €19 million budget over 60 months, CitCom.ai is dedicated to developing Testing and Experimentation Facilities (TEFs) that promote trustworthy AI applications in urban settings. LIST, serving as one of 33 partners, operates a TEF in electromobility, providing services that help industrial partners design and prototype data-driven solutions for the electromobility transition.

German Castignani, Digital Twin innovation Centre Manager, said:

"CitCom.ai unites the strongest players in the field across 11 EU countries, and LIST is proud to demonstrate its expertise in AI testing and experimentation to help companies develop AI-based applications in electromobility."

WeFORMING: Redefining Energy Management

With a € 8.69 million budget over 36 months, WeFORMING is set to redefine buildings as active participants in energy ecosystems through Intelligent Grid-Forming Buildings. As the Technical Coordinator, LIST is part of a consortium of 30 partners from ten countries. WeFORMING aims to transform energy management by integrating iGFBs into energy networks, making buildings integral to the dynamic energy landscape.

Pedro Rodriguez, Head of the Intelligent Clean Energy Systems Unit, stated:

“The WeForming Framework will deploy an umbrella framework covering all aspects around the establishment and adoption of Intelligent Grid-interactive Efficient Buildings in cities. As such, six demonstrations are run across six European countries.”

REGEN: Transforming Urban Development

The REGEN project, coordinated by LIST, aims to revolutionize urban development through low-carbon, inclusive, and affordable solutions. Launched on January 31, 2024, in Beckerich, the project has received a €7.5 million grant from Horizon Europe, with €2.6 million allocated to Luxembourg partners, including LIST.

REGEN introduces the Assessment Framework for Urban Regeneration, validating 50 urban interventions using digital twins and sustainability analysis. Beckerich serves as the testbed, leveraging LIST's participative technology, Managing Urban Spaces Together (MUST), to engage citizens in urban planning. This initiative focuses on circularity in construction and energy sectors, with studies planned for the Beckerich heating network.

Sylvain Kubicki, Lead Research and Innovation Associate at LIST, stated:

"REGEN will empower communities, inform policy orientations, and pave the way for broader deployment of sustainable urban interventions."

ELECTRO MED: Revolutionizing Personalized Medicine

ELECTRO MED leverages cutting-edge technology for personalized medicine. With a € 2.9 million budget, the project focuses on Electrochemically driven peptide synthesis; Acid labile chemistry; Custom microfluidic liquid management; and FET detection of peptides and proteins. These innovations promise superior quality in detecting peptide-protein interactions, enhanced chemical reliability, and rapid results through advanced microfluidic chips.

Cesar Pascual Garcia, Technology Line Manager at LIST, explained:

“Proteins and peptides are important disease biomarkers and promising therapy targets with tremendous potential for precision medicine. Yet the implementation of these therapies faces challenges in specificity, sensitivity, throughput, and cost. With the support of the EU-funded ElectroMed project, LIST is leading an effort to not only address these challenges, but also help take precision medicine to the next level."
