The Luxembourg Institute of Science and Technology (LIST) has published its annual activity report, highlighting a commitment to sustainability and a diverse research team of more than 600 professionals.

In the 2022 report, chairwoman of the directors' board Eva Kremer reaffirms the Institute's "efforts to continue to foster innovation in Luxembourg and create new solutions that promote the global move towards sustainability. It sets out the key achievements of LIST over the past year in terms of cutting-edge research within ... four main fields: materials science, information technology, environmental innovations, and space."
The Institute's overall strategy thereby aligns with the priorities of the European Commission and the Luxembourg government due to this keen focus on the green and digital transitions.
International hub
An international hub for research and innovation, LIST is a diverse organisation employing 676 professionals from 54 different nationalities, with 77% being researchers and specialists in innovation. In 2022, the institution welcomed 114 new recruits.
While the gender ratio currently stands at 66% men and 34% women, the Institute is expected to address this imbalance in its future recruitment drives.
Achievements in scientific excellence were particularly pronounced in 2022 as the LIST engaged in 123 national competitive projects, 57 international competitive projects, and 162 collaborative projects. The Institute also filed 27 patents and made 19 paid licenses available, demonstrating their commitment to the practical application of their research.
This research quality was affirmed by the publication of 178 papers in top-quartile journals.
Future-focused institution
The 2022 LIST report paints a picture of a future-focused institution committed to playing a crucial role in the green and digital transitions. Through research, development, and innovation, LIST seeks to contribute to Luxembourg's vision for a sustainable and digital future.
Minister of the Economy Franz Fayot describes the Institute as a crucially important player in the Grand Duchy: "LIST is a major player and a major partner to the Ministry of Economy. We have so many things going on with LIST in a lot of fields including materials research, space, and digitalisation. We also have plenty of private-public partnerships which are central to the innovation and diversification efforts of Luxembourg."
