The new facilities include a unique platform of bioreactors and large-scale prototypes for bioenergy and water treatment technologies. The centre will also provide additional space for joint laboratories with industrial partners.
The Greentech Innovation Centre is an open innovation facility that focuses on the development of new technologies for environmental pollution detection and treatment, biowaste recycling, bio-based product development, and the implementation of new biorefinery concepts.
The centre's advancements are expected to drive significant change in the fields of biorefining, water treatment, and biogas production. More than 60 scientists and engineers will work closely with industry leaders to support the development of sustainable and safer processes, substances, ingredients, and products.
The centre has already attracted major partners, including the Institut fir biologësch Landwirtschaft an Agrarkultur Luxemburg (IBLA), Bio Rock, Chemra, Ferme du Faascht, PM International, and Probiotic group.
Claude Meisch, Minister for Higher Education and Research, said that the investment highlights LIST's understanding of the necessity of innovation, stating that “LIST is once again clearly demonstrating that it not only understands this challenge but is fully committed to meeting it.”
Joëlle Welfring, Minister for the Environment, Climate and Sustainable Development, echoed this sentiment, stating that "the impressive facilities will accelerate the development of new environmental technologies, which are of particular interest to our businesses and public authorities, especially in the areas of energy transition and wastewater treatment. It is by sharing our knowledge that we will be able to keep pace with the many challenges posed by environmental crises.”
Lucien Hoffmann, Director of the Environmental Research and Innovation department at LIST, emphasised the centre's unique state-of-the-art facilities for environmental biotechnologies research, which allow partners and researchers to develop solutions from lab to industrial scale.
