International in vitro toxicology experts meet in Luxembourg

Published on 19/01/2017

From 9th until 13th January, 2017, the Luxembourg Institute of Science and Technology (LIST) hosted the  “Applied in Vitro Toxicology course”, the second event of its kind to be organised by the European Society of Toxicology in vitro (ESTIV) and the Belgian Society for Toxicology and Ecotoxicology (BELTOX). The involvment of Dr. Arno Gutleb and Dr. Ruth Moeller, two LIST researchers at the Environmental Research and Innovation (ERIN) department, in the BELTOX  Steering Committee resulted in LIST taking on the role of local organiser.

Over the five days, U.S. and European participants as well as Europe’s top scientists speakers from the worlds of academia, research centres and industry, such as Unilever or the Joint Research Centre in Ispra, met at LIST for this intensive course.

On behalf of ESTIV, Prof. Mathieu Vinken from the University of Antwerp opened the course, which was approved by the Federation of national societies of toxicology in Europe (Eurotox) as a training course leading to registration to become a European Registered Toxicologist (ERT). A total of 17 lectures were given, focusing on topics ranging from regulatory issues, the use of stem cells, validation of in vitro assays to metabolism and kinetics in vitro. There, two LIST experts, Dr. Tommaso Serchi and Dr. Arno Gutleb, respectively discussed the pitfalls involved in the testing of nanomaterials in vitro as well as the current status of 3D cell cultures. By highlighting the expertise of LIST in the area of environmental health, they seized the opportunity to not only to demonstrate LIST capabilities in the field to an international audience but also to make a number of interesting contacts with industries and academia.

In addition to plenary lectures, participants took part in a group exercise and hands-on-training on 3D cell cultures and human skin models was provided.

>> The next courses edition will be held in 2018 in Utrecht (The Netherlands) and in 2019 in Bucarest (Romania).
