International interest for a technology developed at LIST

On 11th March 2016, the Luxembourg Institute of Science and Technology (LIST), represented by Ulrich Leopold, was invited by the Stockholm based "White" company, one of the largest architect and urban planning offices in Europe with 800 collaborators, to present to practitioners, companies and academics, the "Smart City and Region Energy Platform". During this week, Ulrich Leopold had been also invited to the International Energy Agency expert group "Solar energy in Urban Planning" to contribute recent knowledge and ideas on integrated energy planning tools for cities.

The "Smart City and Region Energy Platform" is based on the iGuess software framework of which a first version was developed in the framework of the Interreg MUSIC project. iGuess enables the integration of complex environmental data to be modelled, analysed and visualised to facilitate decision-makers with evidence based information. After the MUSIC project, LIST further developed the software framework to a new version, iGuess 2.0, and released an application in the field of urban and regional energy planning called "Smart City and Region Energy platform".

The platform allows city planners, government administrations and utility companies or service providers to access energy maps, visualise their CO2 emissions, identify opportunities for energy exchange and monitor the effects of energy saving measures in their city, leading to more informed decisions. The platform is currently being used for other applications, such as freight transport, multimodal transport, flood risks , ecosystem services . and can be paired with interactive tangible tables to facilitate collaborative decision-making and interacting with thematic maps.
