Initiating children and young people to science and technology while raising awareness on environmental issues is one of the priorities of the Ministry of National Education, Children and Youth. With this in mind, the ministry has supported the publication of two new educational books on eco-construction, authored by the Luxembourg Institute of Science and Technology (LIST) and published by the Association Ingénieurs et Scientifiques du Luxembourg (INGSCI). The books were presented on 20 January 2025 at Lycée Josy Barthel Mamer at a ceremony attended by Claude Meisch, minister of Education, Childhood and Youth, Lucien Hoffmann, Scientific Director of LIST, and Thierry Flies, INGSCI representative.
Both books address a major issue of our time, namely the environmental impact of construction. They aim to raise awareness and inspire children and young people through scientific and educational content written and compiled by experts and researchers at LIST.
"These books represent a significant step forward in raising awareness about eco-construction and we are proud to share LIST expertise for such fulfilling impact," said Perla El Boueiz, Business and Partnership Officer who led this project at LIST. "Through these publications, we aim to provide not only valuable knowledge but also practical tools that inspire both current and future generations to embrace sustainable building practices."
The composition of buildings, their environmental impact, and ways to reconcile construction with nature preservation are central to the book "Bauen für die Zukunft: Nachhaltiges Bauen mit Rücksicht auf den Klimawandel", designed for students in the fourth cycle of primary education. The authors present innovative ideas and envision a world where every building and neighborhood is designed to protect the planet. Through concrete examples, students discover how to design habitats that safeguard the environment and enhance the quality of life for their inhabitants.
The book "Éco-construire pour un avenir durable et résilient" is intended for high school students and explores the environmental challenges related to urban planning and construction, particularly in terms of CO₂ emissions. It offers practical solutions for decarbonizing the sector and addressing climate challenges. Readers will find information on the latest technological advancements and learn how these innovations can transform cities into greener and more enjoyable spaces to live in. This book also provides an inspiring perspective to encourage young people to pursue careers in sustainability and engineering.
On the occasion of the launch of the two books, LIST researchers unveiled two educational and interactive games focusing on the key challenges of eco-construction. These pedagogical tools, designed to combine learning and entertainment, were tested by several classes from the Mamer primary school and high school, allowing students to explore the principles of sustainability in the construction sector in a fun and engaging way.
Starting in February 2025, the two books will be distributed to students in the fourth cycle of primary education and to secondary school students enrolled in programs related to the topic. Filled with scientific and educational content, the books aim to spark curiosity in young people and to encourage them to think about solutions to become agents of change.
By enriching the educational offering and raising awareness among younger generations about the environmental impact of construction, the ministry, in collaboration with LIST and its partners, continues its commitment to fostering education focused on the future.
