LIST projects selected as part of Luxembourg’s "Stroum beweegt" initiative

LIST is delighted to announce that a combination of five projects have been accepted into Luxembourg’s "Stroum beweegt - Elektresch an d'Zukunft" (Electric power moves - electricity into the future) initiative, presented on Wednesday.

Through a collective approach bringing together the various public and private players committed to electric mobility in Luxembourg, the initiative aims to support and advance the development of the electromobility market in Luxembourg and to overcome existing obstacles.

Presentation of the "Stroum beweegt" initiative on 31 March was made by Luxembourg’s Deputy Prime Minister François Bausch Minister of the Environment, Climate and Sustainable Development Carole Dieschbourg and Minister of Energy Claude Turmes. The event was also supported by myenergy, the national structure for a sustainable energy transition.

The five successful LIST projects selected for the initiative and hailing from two departments at LIST; Environmental Research and Innovation (ERIN) and IT for Innovative Services (ITIS) are as follows:

CONNECTING project relies on a complex simulation model and an analysis of the environmental life cycle to analyse the effects of political decisions on private mobility in Luxembourg and Lorraine.
eCoBus ("Electrified cooperative bus system") focuses on the development of an integrated control system based on a cooperative intelligent transport system (C-ITS), which coordinates electric buses, electric charging infrastructure and control traffic.
gENESiS project gives rise to two services / objectives for distinct potential target users: a) An energy management system, including modulation of EV charging, for owners of smart sustainable buildings; b) An optimal multi-period energy flow tool for a distribution grid operator, in order to provide optimal operating flexibility from various controllable assets, including electric vehicles.
HERMES provides an appropriate decision support tool for the territories in order to assess the medium-term consequences of mobility policies.
MODALES ("Modify drivers' behaviour to adapt for lower emissions") aims to study the correlation between driving behaviour and vehicle emissions from three sources: the powertrain, brake wear and tyre wear.

"With Stroum beweegt - Elektresch an d'Zukunft, we want to bring together all the players in the country who are working on the concrete implementation of electromobility in all its facets. Together we want to facilitate the transition to the mobility of the future, respectful of the climate", stated Claude Turmes.

Indeed, the initiative is divided into two levels:

Labelling of players: signature of a charter, presentation of a concrete measure / project, and commitment to support the development of the electromobility market;
Platform for exchange between the players involved: organisation of working meetings with the aim of advancing electric mobility in Luxembourg.

Electromobility: a key role in mobility of the future

In relation to the national objective of reaching a 49% share of electric cars in the country’s vehicle fleet by 2030, the initiative, announced during the official presentation of the Integrated National Energy and Climate Plan ( PNEC), will help accelerate this transition. Significantly reducing greenhouse gas emissions and energy consumption in the transport sector is a major challenge, and electromobility plays an important role in achieving this goal. In addition, electromobility also helps reduce local emissions of air pollutants and noise.

Today in Luxembourg, not only households, but also all Chargy public charging stations are already supplied with 100% renewable green electricity. 7% of the kilometres travelled in 2020 by RGTR buses were electric, with the objective of 100% electrification by 2030.

The national network of Chargy charging stations currently includes around 1,000 charging points. In February 2021 around 190,000 kWh of green electricity was charged, which corresponds to around 1,100,000 kilometres travelled by electric vehicle. In addition, 88 SuperChargy stations, offering ultra-fast charging of electric vehicles, will be installed by main road and motorway service areas as well as in certain P + R car parks in the country.

In addition, the number of individual electric cars is increasing more and more with 11.2% of new registrations in 2020. The "Stroum beweegt - Elektresch an d'Zukunft" initiative aims to accelerate this development.

"The year 2020 was crucial for the electrification of the road fleet with more than two million new registrations in Europe, including more than 5,000 in Luxembourg. Several factors have played a role in the transition to electromobility: the requirements European countries in terms of average CO₂ emissions imposed on car manufacturers, government measures to promote electromobility and finally numerous initiatives by private and public players. All these measures are perfectly demonstrated by the "Stroum beweegt - Elektresch an d'Zukunft initiative." said François Bausch.

Carole Dieschbourg went on to say, "Considering that 67% of our CO2 emissions are linked to transport, electromobility is the sine qua non factor for achieving not only our climate objectives, but also air quality and noise. In order to support the positive dynamics in the automotive market, we have just extended our Clever fueren premiums of up to 8,000 euros for one year. The Stroum beweegt initiative will allow us to consolidate this dynamic by federating and better promoting the efforts of a growing number of players".
