In the framework of its activities in environmental research and more precisely on the topic of diatoms, the Luxembourg Institute of Science and Technology (LIST) invites the experts in this field to discover the book “Diatom taxonomy and ecology: From France to the sub-Antarctic islands”.
On 13-15 September 2016, LIST organised the 35th edition of the Symposium of the “Association des Diatomistes de Langue Française” (ADLaF) that was held in Luxembourg. The book is a special edition of the 2016 ADLaf conference proceedings. Published by the international journal Nova Hedwigia, it features 20 contributions from more than 40 authors spanning the range of Professor René le Cohu’s research work and interests on the taxonomy and ecology of algae, and diatoms in particular. Its release coincides with his 80th birthday.
Co-edited by LIST researcher Luc Ector specialised in Water Security and Safety, with Bart Van de Vijver from Botanical Garden Meise and Antwerp University (BE) and Loïc Tudesque from Toulouse University (FR), the subject matter ranges from purely taxonomic papers to articles dealing with diatom biodiversity, ecology, paleoecology and biogeography. The papers apply both traditional and novel techniques describing more than twenty new species (accompanied with high quality SEM images), three new genera and the revision of several taxa. The book also includes work from phycologists and others working on diatoms and algae. One notable feature of Dr. René Le Cohu’s work is its geographical range, one the book amply reflects: from France where he began his research, to the sub-Antarctic Kerguelen Islands from where he documented a great number of species.
In this framework and among other related activities in the field, LIST is developing the use of terrestrial diatoms for the assessment of soil quality as part of its doctoral education unit in hydrological sciences (Hydro-CSI).
