Materials characterisation has pride of place

In association with the University of Luxembourg, the Luxembourg Institute of Science and Technology (LIST) devoted a day to the presentation of its materials characterisation expertise. An opportunity for its partners to discover, or rediscover, the range of possibilities offered in Luxembourg.

A major player in Luxembourg public research, particularly in the field of materials, LIST's Materials Research and Technology (MRT) department organised its first ever Materials Characterisation Day on Friday 14 October 2016. The event brought together no fewer than 80 people for a presentation of the capabilities of the Materials Characterisation and Testing Platform and of the activities it offers.

LIST collaborators, members of the University of Luxembourg and representatives of industry from Luxembourg and the Greater Region were able to discover or rediscover how much the expertise and cutting-edge equipment provided by LIST can help them on an everyday basis with their research projects and the development of their materials.

The characterisation platform experts presented the various analysis techniques at LIST's disposal by giving numerous examples of applications. These include secondary ion mass spectrometry (SIMS), molecular mass spectrometry, the different forms of electron spectroscopy (XPS and Auger), electron microscopy, helium ion beam microscopy and X-ray diffraction, as well as the different forms of optical spectroscopy (Raman and IR). At the end of their presentations, the LIST specialists handed over to their counterparts from the University of Luxembourg, the other major player in Luxembourg public research in the field of materials.

In light of the success of this first event, a second Materials Characterisation Day is already planned.
