Nexus 2050: LIST shaped the future of AI and 6G innovations

Published on 26/06/2024

Nexus 2050 Luxembourg, which took place on 26 and 27 June 2024 in Luxembourg, showcased Luxembourg Institute of Science and Technology's (LIST) major role in shaping future technologies, particularly in Artificial Intelligence and 6G networks.

AI Sandbox: unb-AI-sed advancements

At Nexus 2050, Francesco Ferrero presented LIST's groundbreaking AI Sandbox, a critical initiative addressing the ethical complexities of Large Language Models (LLMs). LLMs have revolutionized AI by enhancing productivity across various sectors, from healthcare to creative industries. However, their capabilities come with inherent challenges, notably social biases deeply embedded in training data.

The AI Sandbox developed by LIST serves as a controlled testing ground where AI systems undergo rigorous scrutiny within a compliance-centric framework. Although not yet the regulatory sandbox envisioned by law, this platform marks a crucial step towards it. A standout feature is its global-first leaderboard, evaluating 16 LLMs on key ethical biases such as ageism, racism, and sexism. This transparency fosters a deeper understanding of each model's strengths and weaknesses, crucial for advancing fair and inclusive AI technologies.

"As AI continues to evolve, striking a balance between its transformative potential and mitigating social biases remains critical. LIST’s AI Sandbox serves as a cornerstone in fostering fair and inclusive AI development," emphasized Francesco Ferrero.

The Future of 6G just got twinned!

During a compelling side event of MyConnectivity G.I.E. at Nexus 2050, Sébastien Faye outlined the myths and realities surrounding 6G technology, by giving concrete examples from LIST’s project portfolio. Set for deployment around 2030, 6G promises extreme performance beyond current capabilities, encompassing AI-driven networking and advanced applications across various sectors ranging from mobility to industry 5.0.

As coordinator of the 6G-TWIN project funded by Horizon Europe's Smart Networks and Services Joint Undertaking (SNS JU), LIST takes the lead in developing next-generation communication architectures. This €4 million initiative focuses on Network Digital Twinning (NDT), creating virtual replicas of physical networks for real-time optimization, management and control of highly dynamic and complex connectivity scenarios.

"6G represents a paradigm shift towards highly intelligent and adaptive networks," explained Sébastien Faye. "By using AI-native management systems and digital twin technologies, 6G-TWIN aims to pioneer next-generation wireless architectures that are sustainable and resilient."

This presentation also marked the successful conclusion of a hackathon initiated during "The Future Workshop" in December 2023, where LIST served as a co-organizer. Four student groups presented their projects, envisioning scenarios and proposing solutions aimed at driving innovation and enhancing connectivity in the future years.

LIST's presence at Nexus 2050 highlighted its leadership in AI ethics and 6G innovations. As these initiatives evolve, LIST is dedicated to breaking new ground that prioritises the ethical deployment of AI and drives the evolution of next-generation wireless networks.
