Transport and logistics: SUCCESS project presented at TRB2018

Published on 15/01/2018

On 7-11 January 2018, in the framework of its research project SUCCESS, the Luxembourg Institute of Science and Technology (LIST) participated in the Transportation Research Board (TRB 2018) 97th Annual Meeting in Washington, D.C. (USA).

The spotlight theme of this conference - one of the most important of the world in the field of transport and logistics -  focused on “Transportation: Moving the Economy of the Future”. TRB2018 meeting programme covered all transportation modes, with more than 5,000 presentations in nearly 800 sessions and workshops, addressing topics of interest to more than 13,000 transportation professionals from around the world.

TRB2018 was of great interest for LIST, particularly the sessions that presented topics such as urban freight, connected and autonomous vehicles and big data in freight. The institute was represented by Cindy Guerlain who was invited to take part in the workshop “United State – European Commission Roundtable on Urban Freight”, on 11 January 2018. A great opportunity to present and discuss on the H2020 project SUCCESS (Sustainable Urban Consolidation CentrES for construction) together with the Federal Highway Administration – US Department of Transportation (FHWA), the European Commission (EC), and other urban freight researchers and practitioners. Cindy was also able to gain feedback on our institute’s approach to dealing with urban freight movements. This roundtable was one component of a longer-term “twinning”or coordinated research effort by FHWA and the EC.

LIST’s representative also participated in other workshops and thematic meetings such as the workshop “188-Research Success : How to create a Freight Research Community That learns Community that learns from failure”. During this workshop, the interest for SUCCESS project was reinforced as it was mentioned several times that the lack of revenue - when a business model is unviable – is a cause of failure of urban logistics initiatives. There were also many interesting sessions dealing with connected and automated vehicles (CAV) and one specific on Freigh 562-Freight Day, Part 2 : Automated Freight Transportation Systems.

Several interesting contacts and opportunities have been identified to collaborate with European and American organisations on future projects in the transportation domain
