Description

Wine sector is one of the most studied agri-food systems from the environmental sustainability perspective, because of its significant relevance in primary economic production and global trade. This is further supported by a rise of consumer interest on environmental aspects, which has led to the development of several sustainability adoption programs in the wine sector. A qualitative comparison of the twenty most adopted programs worldwide has been done here. Among the most relevant findings and common gaps, our analysis shows that there are: i) a major tendency towards considering the environmental pillar; ii) a lack of indicators used to evaluate ecosystem services and thus estimate the benefits of viticulture on the environment and human health; and iii) a widespread absence of an integrated multi-criteria and quantitative framework for the assessment and communication of sustainability.
