LegoFit

Adaptable technological solutions based on early design actions for the construction and renovation of Energy Positive Homes

Inspiration

The building sector is a major energy consumer, accounting for 40% of final energy consumption in the EU, of which 27% is attributable to the residential sector. The construction industry consumes between 30% and 50% of the natural resources, produces up to 40% of the total waste stream and generates around 39% of the world’s greenhouse gas emissions. Construction value chains therefore need to tackle these challenges urgently. Energy positive homes (EPH) is a concept which strengthens the energy efficiency and the eco-design of passive houses and Nearly Zero Energy Buildings (NZEB).

Innovation

The LEGOFIT project aims to design, implement and validate an adaptable and dynamic integrative approach to make multi-family residential buildings energy positive. This approach is specifically designed for renovations and will be customized during the project for new constructions. It is based on innovative concepts to overcome existing challenges that have been encountered by LEGOFIT partners in the last decade when implementing energy-efficiency projects in residential buildings. To achieve this ambition, LIST supports the implementation of BIM and Digital Twin processes, including in a pilot project in Luxembourg, and leverages them to develop and test two of its technological assets, namely Digital DeConstruction and POESY.

Impact

The LEGOFIT process is revolutionary because it follows the energy performance of the building during its entire lifecycle closely (from design to operation, planning strategies for the end-of-life reuse of building components), improving the decision-making strategy for optimizing the electricity and thermal energy use. LIST’s Digital DeConstruction platform is deployed in the pilot projects, with a focus on delivering sustainability-related data about the components chosen, which will feed the LegoFit material circularity passport. This technology is aimed at increasing the circularity of construction or renovation choices. In addition, LIST will also use its POESY software system, which is used to retrieve perceived comfort feedback from building occupants, and aggregate it further with the constant monitoring provided by the Digital Twins. The aim of this to achieve a high level of energy efficiency without compromising on comfort and Indoor Environmental Quality.
